Session presented on Monday, November 9, 2015:
Ethical issues in nursing are not new; ask any practicing nurse what keeps them up at night. Nurses in all roles and specialties confront myriad ethical issues in their everyday practice. Yet, there are growing concerns about the prominence of ethical issues in health care and gaps in nursing competence in ethical practice, educational models for teaching ethics, policies that undermine nurse integrity, and an insufficient evidence base to guide interventions. In August 2014, 50 nursing leaders participated in a national summit on Nursing Ethics for the 21st Century, sponsored by the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing and Berman Institute of Bioethics. Participants created a Blueprint for the Future focusing on recommendations in clinical practice, education, policy and research and a vision for 21st Century Nursing Ethics. This interactive, experiential session will explore the ethical issues that keep nurses up at night and examine the tools and resources that are needed for nurses to practice ethically in the 21st century. There will be interactive dialogue with participants about how to live the vision for 21st Century Nursing Ethics in the everyday practice to create an ethically grounded model of transformational nursing practice. Finally, we will explore the elements of a culture of ethical practice and highlight implications for inter-professional practice.
