During the Fall of 2016, student leadership interns of Delta Xi chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI) implemented a project to address STTI goals of advancing world health, and celebrating nursing excellence through leadership and service. The project they chose was to support a nationwide initiative, Project Night Night, by collecting donations, assembling, and distributing tote bags to children in homeless shelters. Each tote contains a fuzzy blanket, a cuddly stuffed animal, and an age appropriate book.

Meeting STTI President Cathy Catrambone’s Call to Action for advocacy, Delta Xi developed an evidence-based handout outlining guidelines for safe sleep, as well as pointers for promoting reading in children of all ages, to be included in the totes. The content was based on the American Academy of Pediatrics’ recommendations pertaining to safe sleep for infants, developed to reduce the incidence of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).

SIDS is defined as any infant death that cannot be explained after a thorough case investigation and review of the clinical history. Once the fourth leading cause of infant death in 2014, SIDS has become the third leading cause of infant deaths in 2015. Many new mothers are unaware of current recommendations on placing infants on their backs for sleep and where their infants should sleep. Advice received by mothers from potentially influential sources such as nurses, represents a potentially important modifiable factor that may influence mothers’ choices about infant safe sleep in efforts to reduce the incidence of SIDS.

The handouts contained illustrative graphics, were written at the sixth-grade reading level, and were printed on heavy stock in full color. The attached file may be downloaded and printed for clinical use by nurses and other disciplines in working with families to promote safe sleep and promote reading.
