Role Transformation: The NPD Practitioner Becomes the Orientee

Based on the lack of evidence in the literature a gap exists in defining the orientation process for the NPD practitioner. In a recent review of the discussion forum on the ANPD web site it was noted that several participants have posed the question of the availability of a formalized orientation program/competency for the new NPD practitioner. The initial competency must reflect the ongoing changes that occur within NPD practice. It is anticipated that this will help novice NPD practitioners assimilate to their new role. Recognizing this need, we transitioned to a competency based tool for the orientation for the NPD practitioner. Previously used was a task oriented checklist, however it was determined that the documentation of the orientation process should be based on the expectations of the role. The new tool was developed based on the Nursing Professional Development Scope and Standards of Practice (2010).The tool includes necessary competencies for the NPD practitioner new to their role while aligning with the relevant ANPD standards. This has been implemented in a major academic medical center when there were five new NPD practitioners. A preliminary evaluation of the tool was completed via an anonymous electronic survey by six experienced NPD practitioners who participated in the orientation process. There was a positive response indicating that the tool helped identify areas for growth and goals following the orientation process. Further, the new NPD practitioners felt that this tool increased their level of confidence of what they had achieved during their orientation period and also provided them with a framework for continued development in their role.
